2016 Colombaio di Santa Chiara "Campo Pieve" Vernaccia di San Gimignano

SKU #1401102

This family-run estate is farmed with no pesticides and harvested by hand in the heart of Tuscany. Winery note: "Soft pressing of the grapes. Fermentation with local yeasts at a controlled temperature. Maturation on the fine lees takes place in cement vats with periodic bâtonnage for about 18/20 months. Straw-coloured. A complex and aromatic perfume with notes of citrus fruit and flowers. On the palate it is sapid, intense, deep. The elegance and structure of this wine make it stand out."

The 2016 Colombaio di Santa Chiara "Campo Pieve" Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a wonderfully aromatic Tuscan white wine. On the nose, it offers up fresh aromas of citrus, flowers, and almonds. The lees aging really gives this wine a rich, round, mouth-filling experience on the palate This is a serious (and delicious) white wine! Certified Organic.

Most of what passes for Vernaccia is rarely met with any fanfare and the wines are often overlooked for more substantial options. This producer, however, takes Vernaccia to another level and this is one of the best examples you're likely to come across. Although it opens with a pleasant nose of floral and mineral it truly shines on the palate where it expands with richness, density and flavor from beginning to end. It was a huge customer favorite at our LA Italian tasting and is worth every cent. Impressive.

Here is a rich and textured white supported by an amazing beam of acidity that keeps the many layers focused, clean and refreshing. Honeyed aromas of crushed flowers lead to a substantial middle of ripe orchard fruit, sweet citrus and palate clearing mineral. This big, mouth-filling wine is pure pleasure in a bottle.

A classic Italian white we all should be making more time for, Vernaccia is a classic Tuscan variety that has power and structure to spare. With the elegance and finesse of much lighter grapes, Vernaccia is a standout, and this bottling from Colombaio di Santa Chiara is no exception. Awesome, refreshing acidity, braced up against the structured citrus notes and supported by light licorice and smoke, makes this a food wine par excellence, perfect for a special meal. One of my favorite dollar-for-dollar offerings.
