 The 2016 Proprietary Red is blended of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc, 18% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it emits an incredible array of seductive floral notes—violets, lavender and rose hip tea—with a core of warm cassis, redcurrant jelly, dark chocolate, cigar box, tapenade and crushed rocks plus hints of bay leaves, beef drippings and yeast extract. Medium to full-bodied, the palate explodes with vivacious black fruit sparked by red fruit, herbal and mineral accents. Winery Notes: A slightly cooler growing season, 2016 produced a smaller than normal crop that benefited from an extended hang time. This new vintage of Continuum shows delicacy on the nose with citrus blossom and rose petal aromas. The wine builds in power and presence on the palate with cassis, dark fruits, bergamot, dried wild herb, and notes of cigar box and leather. 2016 is expansive and sinewy on the mid palate with a ferrous minerality. 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc, 18% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot

Being a Napa Native, it always makes my heart ache a little when people consider Napa reds as big, fruit-forward, over-saturated fruit bombs loaded with RS, and while there are quite a bit of wines in that style from the Napa Valley, the Continuum Estate Red is not one of them. Having the pleasure to taste the most recent vintage with Dante Mondavi, I was really impressed. With Only 46% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, and 31% Cabernet Franc, the Estate red showcases a very well balanced red with proper body and elegance. It's Bordeaux style blends like that reminds me why Napa won the 1976 Tasting of Paris in the first place. Napa possesses the proper microclimates, terroir and soils, and Continuum knows exactly how to properly execute it. Simply put, this bottle is outstanding.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
