Winery Notes: "Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 850 acre estate of forest and vineyard on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain which rises behind the town of Saint Helena. The vineyard occupies about 226 acres of the estate and is broken into 135 small and separate hillside vineyard blocks. Each small block and slope has a unique soil, exposure to the sun, and microclimate. Many blocks are terraced and vines are typically trained in the vertical goblet method. Each vineyard block produces a unique wine, giving the winemaker a wealth of choices. The property produces a traditional Bordeaux red blend as its primary wine. The wine is predominately Cabernet Sauvignon with small components of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot."

The full story of Spring Mountain Vineyard is too long and complex for this staff review but let me condense it as best I can. The estate as it stands today started as three separate properties first established in 1873. It was the first Cabernet Sauvignon to be planted on Spring Mountain. In 1882 the second piece of the estate was planted by the Beringer Brothers. In 1891 the third section was established by a French immigrant named, Fortune Chevalier. The estate today is comprised of 135 individual blocks with over 1000ft in elevation change. The property is very steep with an average slope of 25-30%. The wines of Spring Mountain Vineyard hold a very special place in our hearts at K&L. We have sold these wines for many decades. In fact one of the first wines we ever promoted by email blast in the late 1990's was Spring Mountain Vineyard Cabernet! When aged bottles show up in our Old & Rare department, staff race to buy them! A few years back a bottle of the legendary 1976 vintage showed up in our bin-end close-out section with a fill that was barely up to the low shoulder...even with that low ullage it turned out to be the best wine of the night, still packed with black and blue fruit, tobacco, cedar and leather. The 2015 release is an absolute classic Spring Mountain Vineyard expression. Dark fruits laced with pencil shavings, dried tobacco, crushed rocks. There are big, structural tannins wrapped in the currant and cassis fruit. Facing east, the shaded afternoon aspect of the site has preserved those evermore illusive varietal characters in Cabernet; this wine harks back to a more Bordeaux inspired style, it eschews over ripeness and is all the more compelling for it. A wine of true pedigree and class. A wine that represents one of the finest values in modern day Napa. Drink now or over the next 20+ years.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.


- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
