2016 Domaine La Soumade Gigondas

SKU #1411228 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Full-bodied without seeming at all heavy, the 2016 Gigondas is a 70-30 Grenache-Syrah blend. Raspberries and crushed stone mark the nose, while the texture is rich and tannic but ripe. The flavors turn darker and deeper on the finish, shading toward plum and mocha. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. (JC) (10/2018)

Hints of smoked nut, licorice and wild herb accent sumptuously ripe black plum and wild strawberry flavors here. The midpalate is fleshy and forward, cushioned by delicate acidity and fine, velvet tannins. Its open-knit demeanor is welcoming now but should drink well through 2026. (AI) (12/2018)

92 points Decanter

Always a more elegant Gigondas. It has a pure, lifted, fragrant nose of black cherry and plum with a touch of garrigue and dark chocolate. In the mouth it shows exceptionally fine tannins, with good concentration despite only being medium-bodied. It's perhaps a little light in texture and grunt for some tastes, but it's harmonious and seamless on the palate, with well balanced acidity. (MW) (10/2017)

92 points Vinous

Lurid ruby-red. A complex, highly perfumed bouquet features ripe red and dark berry preserve and spicecake qualities, along with suggestions of incense and smoky minerals. Displays a suave blend of richness and energy on the palate, offering sweet blackberry and cherry cola flavors and a touch of candied lavender. The floral note carries through emphatically on the impressively long finish, which is shaped by harmonious tannins that fold smoothly into the wine's plush fruit. (JR) (8/2018)

Rhone Blends

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
