2002 Disznókö Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos (500ml)

SKU #1417188 95 points Wine Enthusiast

Sensuous aromas of honeycomb, canned peache and apricot drives the nose. It's full bodied, with flavors of honey and grilled pineapple, and balanced by bright acidity. (JJ) (12/2014)

Creamy and succulent, this 2002 from AXA Millésime’s Hungarian estate shows Tokaji at its most opulent. It’s broad and rich, layered with pear, peach and almond frangipane flavor, a warm, soft minerality providing a subtle savory contrast. While the acidity is barely noticeable, the wine ends clean, lasting for minutes on pure fragrance. (12/2014)

More than a decade old, this mature Tokaji evokes apple tart, quince paste, brown spices and clove, with a hint of orange peel. Elegant and racy, with a long, dried fruit?infused aftertaste. (BS) (11/2014)

A big, sweet, caramelized, full-bodied beauty, the 2002 6 Puttonyos offers tons of peach and orange fruits, a mouthfilling, viscous texture, bright acidity, and a good finish. This cuvée is 75% Furmint and 25% Zeta that’s all fermented and aged two years in barrel. You can safely drink it anytime over the coming 2+ decades. (3/2018)

Tasted at the Disznoko tasting in London, the 2002 Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos had an intense dried honey, lanolin and brown spice-scented bouquet that is very satisfying, later even a hint of Vervanne tea surfacing through the aromas. The palate is quite sweet on the entry (even for a 6 Puttonyos) with spice, gingerbread and lemon rind infusing the viscous texture. It is discretely moving into its secondary phase and should give another two decades of drinking pleasure without problem. This is a superb counterpart to the 5 Puttonyos this year. (NM) (10/2016)

- Better known for its paprika than its wine, Hungary is nonetheless one of Eastern Europe's most significant wine-producing countries. Exerjo, Furmint, Hárslevelü and Mezesfeher are just some of the indigenous (and unpronounceable!) varieties most widely planted. And Tokaji is Hungary's biggest success story. Made since the sixteenth century, Tokaji is an extremely sweet wine that was adored by the Russian Tsars. It is made in a manner similar to Sherry, and is reputed to be the longest lived, non-fortified wine in existence (a few hundred years is not unheard of). Hungary's continental climate--predictably cold winters and hot summers--makes it an ideal location for Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon as well.
