SKU #1420886

Foursquare Rum Distillery is located on a former sugar plantation that dates back to approximately 1720, within the tiny Caribbean island of Barbados. The distillery was re-opened by the Seale family in 1996, and distilling operations and blending are currently directed by Richard Seale, 4th Generation Trader/Distiller of R.L. Seale & Co. "Empery" is the 9th release in the coveted "Exceptional Cask Selection." A Single Blended Rum consisting of both artisanal pot and traditional twin column Coffey distilled molasses rums, this is a blend of two single blended rums, both 14 years of age. One was matured in a combination of first, second, and third fill ex-bourbon barrels for 14 years; the other was matured in ex-bourbon for 10 years, then transferred into ex-Oloroso sherry barrels for 4 years. A double maturation.

An unexpected blend from one of the foremost experts in rum, this release is a godsend. One shudders to imagine what the stock aged in Oloroso barrels tasted like before it was married with the purely bourbon-aged batch. Even 4 years in the tropics caused the sherry cask to fill this bottling to the gills with a wealth of savory, nutty character. Impossibly dense, it features the same charred caramel we know and love from Foursquare, but with it stone fruits, a touch of waxy honey, and ample baking spice. But this is by no means sweet; all this flavor is balanced perfectly with a snappy, spicy, gloriously dry finish. My words do not begin to do this justice; you'll just have to try it to see for yourself what makes this so special.

I had the pleasure of opening this beautiful bottle of Foursquare rum and spending some time with it, rather than just tasting, to know what it's about. Foursquare is well known for their high-quality and often unique blends, and this is truly no exception. On the nose, I noticed an interesting gunpowder note floating atop beautiful notes of redwood, stone fruit, and sweet vanilla. The palate is round and robust, with the wood notes really showing through beautifuly. The finish is laced with caramel, stone fruit, and woody tannin. This is truly a rum drinkers rum, which had me sitting back and thinking about it all evening. And I will consider that an evening well spent! Get one while they last because these Foursquare are not to be missed!

This a real deep and complex rum. The nose has an interesting forest floor aroma, with some nice sweet notes. In the mouth it is round and rich, with a rustic mineral sub-theme. It is concentrated, with dried fruit, caramel, and a touch of funk flavors. I preferred this rum with a touch of water.
