2015 John Duval "Plexus" GSM Barossa Valley South Australia

SKU #1429999 94 points James Halliday

Matured for 15 months in French oak (10% new). Richly robed in luscious fruits supported by gentle tannins and a dab of oak. It is well made (of course) and is strongly Barossan in temperament. What you make of this will depend on your personal preference. (8/2017)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro blend, the 2015 Plexus has a pale to medium garnet-purple color and nose of kirsch, red currant jelly and raspberry preserves with hints of Chinese five spice, hoisin, roses, black pepper and underbrush. Rich, concentrated, full-bodied and full-on seductive, it fills the palate with exotically spiced red fruit preserves. With plush tannins and a balanced freshness, it has a perfumed finish with satisfying persistence. (LPB) (8/2017)

91 points James Suckling

A flavorful red with lots of juicy-fruit and chocolate character. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a savory finish. (7/2017)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

Renowned Barossa winemaker John Duval's reds have a certain style signature to them: savory, herbaceous and finely structured--polished without pretense--and this classic Aussie blend doesn't disappoint. The nose swims with plums, raspberries, oak spice, dried floral and green-herbal notes, backed by a savory streak and herbal tonic nuances. Medium to full bodied, the palate is gripped firmly by fine-grained, herbal tannins. Plums and oak spice round out the finish. (10/2019) (10/2019)

Wine Spectator

Berry and cherry flavors are tangy and appealing in this red, with spice, sage and cedar notes lingering on the polished finish. Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre. (MW, Web-2018)

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim. While many equate Aussie wines with “value,” there are more than a few extremely rare and pricey options, which never fail to earn the highest ratings from wine publications and critics throughout the world.
