2007 Raymond Usseglio "Cuvée Imperiale" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L)

SKU #1437829 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

One of the most singular wines out there is the 2007 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée Impériale. Made from 100% very old vine Grenache and aged in tank, it offers a sensational bouquet of spring flowers, peach pit, black raspberries, violets and mint. Full-bodied, unctuous and layered, with an enormous mid-palate, it has silky tannin, incredible depth and a great, great finish. This beauty just glides across the palate and has another decade or more of prime drinking. (JD) (2/2017)

91-94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Glass-staining ruby. Powerful, youthfully brooding nose shows deep dark berry, kirsch, Indian spices and licorice. Weighty blackberry and cherry compote flavors are framed by gentle tannins and given lift by tangy minerality. Becomes fresher with air and finishes with excellent clarity and persistence. (JR) (1/2009)

Dark, with a brawny edge to the chestnut, briar and tobacco notes, which lead the way for the muscular core of black currant and fig fruit. There's a solid, tarry finish. Best from 2010 through 2019. (JM) (11/2009)

Jancis Robinson

Very dark. Extremely opulent, super-ripe (but not overripe) nose with sufficient freshness. Lovely silky texture – wonderfully handled tannins, which are there in profusion, but only under the creamy fruit. Fresh finish. 18/20 points. (JR) (12/2008)

Rhone Blends

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
