2014 Bodegas Lanzaga Rioja (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1440134 96 points James Suckling

A rich and dense red with deep and rich flavors of spice, smoked meat, mushrooms and berries. Medium to full body. Extremely long and creamy. Wonderful fruit and balance. Drink now. (7/2019)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

I previewed three vintages of the village red form Lanciego in Rioja, starting with the 2014 Lanzaga. This was a great opportunity to check how the wine is evolving. They used larger barrels and are making the wine more transparent and increasing the amount of other grapes (it probably has less Tempranillo since perhaps 2012), and I see incremental improvements in quality. Of course, you have to take into account the conditions of the growing season. Here you see more ripeness than in 2013, but it feels very balanced and harmonious, with fine tannins and a tasty finish. 19,400 bottles produced. They have gradually reduced the quantity of bottles to increase the quality. (LG) (6/2019)

K&L Notes

Based in the Alavesa village of Lantziego, the Telmo Rodriguez fronted Bodegas Lanzaga is on a tear of late, arguably producing some of the most important, thought provoking and region re-defining wines in Spain's most consequential wine region, Rioja. This bottling opens with savory and spicy, muscular dark cherry, plum and cumin aromas, which lead to a structured, fresh, serious palate. Impressive stuff.

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
Country:

Spain

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
