 Château Mourre du Tendre has three hectares of vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the lieu-dits of La Crau, La Guigasse and Saintes-Vierges, all in sandy terroirs. Kirsch, leather, peppery herbs and dried herbs all emerge from the 2015 Châteauneuf du Pape Tres Vieilles Vignes Cuvée Prestige, which is medium to full-bodied, concentrated, yet surprisingly elegant and seamless on the palate. Classic, with tons of the garrigue and herbs of the region, it has terrific tannin quality, no hard edges, and a great finish. This cuvée is 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre brought up in concrete and larger foudre for three years.  (2/2018)

Located in the heart of Provence in Courthézon between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Orange, the Château du Mourre du Tendre is a family property with a history of 7 generations of passionate winemakers. Since 2013, Paul (son of Florence and grandson of Jacques) took the helm and is now continuing the family business with the same drive for the pursuit of excellence that he learned alongside his grandfather. The 2015 opens with rich aromas of dried herbs, red currant and cured meats. Slightly smoky on the palate, the wine has beautifully mellow, round tannin with full body and layers of spice and fruit. The finish here is exceedingly long and complex. The wine already shows a fair amount of development and is in its first drinking window. Paired with grilled meats, it’s an immediate win. This wine is versatile and could work well with almost any savory dish that displays the right amount of body and flavor to balance the power and depth of the wine.

In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
