2018 Fundamental Wines (Tensley) Central Coast White (Elsewhere $18)

SKU #1446547 92 points Jeb Dunnuck

A blend of Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, and Viognier brought up in neutral barrels and tank, the 2018 White Wine is a brilliant white that tastes like it costy three times the price. Honeyed citrus, tangerine, flowers, and brioche notes all emerge fro the glass, and it's beautifully textured, layered, full bodied, and balanced. It way over-delivers. (10/2019)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2018 Fundamental White is a blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc and Roussanne with aromas of warm peaches, musk melon, honeysuckle, lychee and elderflower with a stony hint. The palate is medium to full-bodied and spicy with great freshness and a textured finish. (EB) (9/2019)

K&L Notes

As owners one of the most successful and highly acclaimed wineries along the California Central Coast, Joey and Jennifer Tensley have now created a new line of wines built to deliver on that same level of quality but at a more consumer friendly price point. Inspired by the great yet inexpensive wines found around regional France, the Tensley's now offer their own value-driven, everyday drinkers. This lovely Rhone-style white blend over-delivers at the price point, resulting in a most surprisingly delicious value.

Gorgeous aromas of papaya and pear dominate the nose with more layers of tropical fruits and jasmine hiding in the background. A terrific sipper on its own but would pair well with roast chicken and grilled pork tenderloin. This is sleek and inviting wine truly transcends its humble price point.

The highly talented Joey Tensley has crafted an outstanding white wine inspired by the amazing value-driven whites he’s long cherished from the south of France. At first you’re greeted with hints of honey and cinnamon poured over freshly cut seasonal peaches. The aromatics are exotic and wild with plenty of orchard fruit, orange water, and middle-eastern spice. There’s plenty of bracing acidity to keep the wine fresh and bright on the palate with a solid fruit core. This Rhone-style white is arguably the best version at this price I’ve come across in quite a while.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.

- With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year.
Specific Appellation:

Santa Maria/Santa Barbara

- Santa Maria and Santa Ynez make up the two AVAs of Santa Barbara County, an area known for its natural beauty and temperate climate. The best grape-growing areas, however, are located on the very coastal reaches of these two appellations, and are cooled by ever-present fog and ocean breezes (it is even cooler and foggier here than Carneros!). As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
