2016 Etre Sonoma Coast Chardonnay (Previously $30)

SKU #1477756 93 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Low in oak and high in acidity, this is an earthy herbal white that's stony and salty, capturing full-on the spirit of the ocean. Light and lemony, it has complexity and elegance in spades. (VB) Inner quote mark (3/2019)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2016 Chardonnay Sonoma Coast has a delicate nose of pear and apple fruit with orange blossom, stone and hints of baker's yeast. Medium-bodied with lovely mineral and floral hints, it finishes on a yeasty note. (EB) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

K&L Notes

Etre is a small project from veteran Jeff Gafner (Saxon Brown, Hestan, Black Kite, Rams Gate). It's made in a Chablis inspired style without the use of oak and without malolactic fermentation. The fruit for this wine comes from two extremely well regarded vineyards - Durrell and Sangiacomo! This is a winery direct deal at a price that is unheard of for a wine of this quality. Though I had not heard of Etre wines before I was simply floored by a sample of this wine I received. The bottle was gone in 20 mins flat. When I dug a little deeper it was easy to see why this bottle was so darn delicious. The fruit is sourced from two of the finest Chardonnay vineyards in California: Sangiacomo and Durrell. The wine is made in a very deliberate "Chablis" style. It sees no oak and does not go through malolactic fermentation, keeping it fresh and crisp. It's just flat out delicious, and tastes very much like high-end Chablis. Aromas of salt air, crushed quince, freshly zested citrus and oyster shell. On the finish complex, baked bread / hazelnut qualities persist with saline minerality and vibrant, mouth watering acidity. I immediately took every case available from the winery and we have pricing that's almost too goo to be true! Just wait until you get this in your glass, it's stunning.

An excellent example of the pure varietal. Citrus driven with hints of melon on the nose . Bright acidity and a wonderful, rich mouthfeel. This is a deal so good, you should buy a few now and a few to lay down. Hats off to our buyer Mr. Woodhouse for finding such a bargain.
